The story

Cities of tomorrow

For the Intelligent Buildings Group of the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers and the CIB W098 commission on intelligent and responsive buildings, Amir asked what we really know about the future of cities and smart cities, and what city-wide challenges such as the pandemic teach us about the buildings inside them.

Buildings that learn

He argued that future buildings should be designed, developed and maintained on data-driven platforms, so that they are context-aware, adaptable and responsive, and that smartness in the built environment is moving beyond environmental targets towards user-oriented implementation. User-centred design, he proposed, is the focal point that joins the sustainability, digital and health agendas, building on his 2016 position that intelligent buildings are dynamic and evolving rather than static.
