The story

A roadmap for the field

For the International Council for Research and Innovation in Building and Construction's commission on intelligent and responsive buildings, Amir led the chapter that sets out where intelligent buildings should go next. The roadmap was edited by Derek Clements-Croome and written in association with the CIBSE Intelligent Buildings Group.

Beyond automation

The chapter argues that intelligent buildings have been held back by too many competing definitions, and that they must move beyond automation towards buildings that are responsive, value-driven and adaptable. It extends the established key performance indicator framework with two new indicators, health and well-being, and urban-scale responsiveness, linking intelligent buildings to the goals of smart cities.

What comes next

It proposes a development pathway across the building lifecycle built on BIM, augmented reality, robotic environments and neuroscience-based design, including EEG monitoring of how people experience space: a line of work Amir has since built into his neuro-architecture research and the From Neuro-architecture to Neuro-cities book collection.

The pathway of future intelligent buildings from the chapter: six key performance indicators, two of them new (health and well-being, and urban-scale responsiveness), leading towards smart cities through augmented reality, robot-based environments and neuroscience-based design.
