The story

Architecture research supporting heat resilience

The University of Washington’s Community Heat Resilience Tool helps communities assess heat-related health risks and consider practical interventions. Its green-roof guidance draws on research co-authored by Umberto Berardi, Professor Amir Ghaffarianhoseini and Ali GhaffarianHoseini to explain how vegetated roofs affect solar radiation and building temperatures.

From environmental review to practical guidance

Prepared by Alan Wang and Jeremy J. Hess and updated on 19 June 2023, the guidance addresses how green roofs work, potential benefits, implementation, costs and limitations. It uses the 2014 Applied Energy review “State-of-the-art analysis of the environmental benefits of green roofs,” connecting co-authored architectural research with climate-health decisions.
