The symposium

SimAUD, the Symposium on Simulation for Architecture and Urban Design, held its eighth edition at the University of Toronto, bringing together researchers, designers and software developers working on simulation for buildings and cities.

The workshop

Amir led the symposium's hands-on ENVI-met workshop on urban building modelling for energy and microclimate, taking participants through simulation input, model set-up and the validation of results. Dr Umberto Berardi followed with a theoretical presentation on urban building energy and microclimate models.

The paper

In the Urban Microclimate session, Amir presented work with Umberto Berardi and colleagues on exploring the thermal performance of outdoor and indoor spaces with IES and ENVI-met, using the University of Malaya campus in Kuala Lumpur as the case. Field measurements and simulations mapped where people are least comfortable: asphalt and parking areas, open to the sun, with no trees. The study was later published in Science of the Total Environment (2019).
